Walk into any hospital in Kuala Lumpur after having a baby, and you'll find a stack of flyers advertising confinement centres. Packages start from RM40,000. Some claim "5-star hotel suites". Most promise "professional care". But if you ask what that actually means — who the nanny is, what qualifications she holds, whether there's a lactation consultant on staff — the answers are often vague.
The problem isn't the price. It's that in Malaysia, there is no consistent standard for what a confinement centre must provide.
A Regulatory Gap
Unlike Singapore, Malaysia has no dedicated legislation governing confinement centres. The closest thing is a licensing circular issued by the Selangor state government — and even that is limited in scope. There is no national standard for nanny training, no requirement to have a lactation consultant on staff, and no mandatory disclosure of how many mothers each nanny is responsible for at any one time.
That leaves families in a difficult position: they are paying a significant sum for a service that has no guaranteed baseline of care.
Five Gaps That Matter
- Shared nanny care. Many centres assign a single nanny to multiple mother-and-baby pairs simultaneously. When your nanny is split across several families, she cannot be fully present for yours.
- No mandatory nanny certification. Without a nationally recognised qualification, the quality of nanny training varies enormously — and there is no easy way to verify it.
- No lactation specialist. Most centres do not employ a qualified lactation consultant. Breastfeeding problems — engorgement, low supply, poor latch — are left to the nanny's judgment, or simply not addressed.
- Facilities not built for the job. Being in a hotel is not the problem — the problem is when the suite is just a room. Many "confinement suites" have no full kitchen and no infrastructure to prepare proper confinement meals on-site, so meals are cooked elsewhere, hours before they reach the mother.
- Price without a promise. A premium price is justified when it buys a dedicated care team — a 1-to-1 certified nanny, a lactation consultant, daily treatments. Too often in Malaysia, it buys the room alone: a bigger, better-furnished room, with the standard of care left undefined.
