Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has guided postpartum recovery for thousands of years. At Singjoy, we honour this wisdom by incorporating time-tested TCM principles into every aspect of our confinement meal planning.
The core framework is known as 一排二清三调四补 — four progressive stages that guide a mother's recovery from childbirth. Each stage has a specific purpose, specific ingredients, and specific cooking methods designed to restore the body systematically rather than all at once.
Stage 1: 排 — Detoxify (Week 1)
The first stage focuses on clearing lochia (postpartum discharge) and promoting uterine contraction. The body needs to expel residual blood and fluids accumulated during pregnancy.
During this phase, meals are light and warming. Common ingredients include sheng hua soup (生化汤), ginger, sesame oil, and liver — all believed to promote blood circulation and help the uterus return to its normal size. Heavy tonics are avoided as the body is not yet ready to absorb rich nutrients.
Stage 2: 清 — Cleanse (Week 2)
Once the initial detoxification is underway, the second stage focuses on cleansing the digestive system and improving water metabolism. Many new mothers experience water retention and sluggish digestion after childbirth.
Meals during this stage incorporate ingredients that support kidney function and reduce swelling, such as red bean soup, barley, and lean pork kidney dishes. The aim is to restore the body's natural fluid balance and prepare the digestive system for richer, more nourishing foods in the weeks ahead.
Stage 3: 调 — Adjust (Week 3)
The third stage adjusts the body's Qi and blood flow, preparing for optimal lactation. By this point, the body has cleared toxins and excess fluids, and is ready for more targeted restoration.
Soups and dishes rich in collagen, black chicken, and astragalus (黄芪) help strengthen Qi. Papaya fish soup is a classic dish at this stage, believed to boost milk production while being gentle on digestion.
Stage 4: 补 — Nourish (Week 4+)
The final stage provides deep nourishment to restore vitality and prevent future ailments. This is when the body can fully absorb rich, warming tonics.
Classic ingredients include ginseng, dang gui (当归), black sesame, and premium Chinese herbs paired with nutrient-dense proteins. These meals are designed to replenish blood, strengthen bones, and build lasting immunity — laying the foundation for long-term health.
